Adaptive TransportationAdaptive Transportation ProceduresOSU Handivan and COTA's Project Mainstream are two adaptive transportation systems for OSU students, faculty and staff with disabilities. Handivan: This service operates throughout the year, transporting passengers door--to--door, both on and off campus within University established boundaries. The Handivan also offers "Shopping Nights" where persons eligible to use the service are able to take the Handivan to a local grocery store. To check the exact hours of Handivan operation, learn the days and hours of Shopping Nights, and schedule rides, students should call the Handivan Dispatch Line at 292 - 6202. ODS is not responsible for any scheduling. COTA, Project Mainstream: This service provides door--to--door drop off. Information regarding Project Mainstream is available by calling COTA at 275 - 5833, or by accessing COTA's website: http://www.cota.com./serv/src--project.htm Eligibility applications for Project Mainstream can take several weeks to process. It is important that a completed application be sent to the Mainstream Office as soon as possible. COTA also provides travel training service for passengers wanting to learn to ride regular route buses. For information on this program, call 275 - 5828. Temporary Handivan Transportation ProceduresStudents who have temporary disabilities that impact mobility may be eligible to ride the campus Handivan on a temporary basis. Examples of such situations might include broken ankles, using crutches for a short time frame, or recovering from an operation. Students who wish to ride the Handivan on a temporary basis must contact the Office for Disability Services to become eligible. Students requesting temporary services may either come by the office or call the office at 292-3307 and ask to speak to a counselor. Documentation is required to ride the Handivan on a temporary basis. Documentation may include things such as doctor’s notes or things such as emergency room discharge papers. In cases where the Handivan needs to be used immediately, the Office for Disability Services will not require immediate proof of disability. In these cases a student requesting temporary services may fax documentation or proof of temporary disability at a later date. The student has up to two weeks to provide documentation of the temporary disability. If documentation is not produced, the Office for Disability Services will contact the Handivan dispatch office and cancel the student’s Handivan privileges. After the student needing the temporary services has provided the needed information to the counselor by phone or in person, the counselor will fax the information to the Handivan dispatch office. After it is received at the dispatch office, the student must contact Handivan to arrange a ride schedule by calling 292-6202. There is no charge for using Handivan services. Temporary riders are subject to the same regulations for using the Handivan system as permanent riders. Office for Disability Services counselors are authorized to approve temporary Handivan riders for only set amounts of time (i.e. 2 weeks, one month, one academic quarter, etc,). If a temporary rider wishes to continue riding the Handivan beyond the approved time frame, then additional disability documentation will need to be provided to the Office for Disability Services. |
